Client: Chambers Architecture
Dayton, Ohio
Project Responsibilities: The Chambers Architecture studio was itself a remodeling project. A former bar, the building now contains a two-bedroom house and separate office. Prior to the renovation, the building had concrete floors, painted concrete block walls and a suspended ceiling. Both the building and site are very narrow, presenting challenges in developing a functional floor plan.
Despite the small lot and building, a new efficient floor plan created a sense of spaciousness by incorporating large windows facing a courtyard as well as an open layout in the living, dining and kitchen area.
The courtyard is the focus of the home, with the large living room windows creating a connection between the interior and exterior spaces. All but two windows have views into the courtyard. A glass door from the living area allows for easy access to the outdoors. Low-maintenance landscaping was heavily incorporated to create a garden effect both inside and out. Baskets and pots of annuals augment the landscaping with pops of seasonal colors.
The concrete floor was covered with maple plank flooring; all doors and cabinetry are now solid cherry. The new structure is super-insulated for comfort and low-energy costs. The fireplace is a high-efficiency Rumford design flanked by cherry cabinetry for storage.
